Midyear Outlook 2016

Posted On: Jul 15, 2016

At the midyear point of 2016, LPL Research proposes a vote of confidence: in the economy, the market, and most importantly, in our ability as investors to remain focused on our long-term goals. This is not always easy. We may be entering the eighth year of this economic recovery and bull market, but that doesn’t mean the memories of the Great Recession have faded away; and the volatility we’ve seen this year revives those memories and takes an emotional toll. As we cast our ballots, our vote is that the current economic recovery and bull market may continue through 2016…

The Brexit Vote: What You Need to Know

Posted On: Jun 27, 2016

Posted by lplresearch   Today we received the unprecedented news that the United Kingdom (U.K.) has voted to leave the European Union (EU). The U.K., comprised of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales, has been a member of the 28-nation EU since 1975. The EU members are allowed to freely move goods, capital, services, and people among the member nations. However, they do not all share a single currency. (Countries within the EU that share a single currency—the euro—are referred to collectively as the Eurozone.) The Brexit vote was a referendum on whether the U.K. would remain part of the…

Brexit

Today we received the unprecedented news that the United Kingdom (U.K.) has voted to leave the European Union (EU), which had led to significant volatility in the global markets. In situations like these, it becomes more important than ever to remain calm, harness our emotions, and stay committed to our long-term plans. Although this result was unexpected, we are here to offer continued support and guidance through these challenging market events. Yesterday, June 23, the United Kingdom (the U.K., comprised of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales) undertook an all-country referendum about whether the U.K. should stay in or exit…

Summer's Hot Issues On May 21, 2015, the S&P 500 Index closed at 2,130.82, an all-time closing high for this broad measure of 500 large U.S. companies (St. Louis Federal Reserve). In the year since, it has failed to recapture that level. On April 20 of this year, we finished at 2,102.40 and we closed out May at 2,096.96, but there hasn’t been a new high in over a year (St. Louis Federal Reserve). It’s not uncommon for the major indexes to go through periods where gains are elusive or we experience unwanted volatility. According to research provided by LPL…

Market Review Letter 05-20-2016

Why we buy what we buy Last month, I talked about stocks and how the collective wisdom of the market values, or prices, companies. Continuing on with that theme, it’s important to understand why I may recommend a particular stock, bond, or any investment for one person, and why that same security may not be appropriate for another. In some ways, it’s fair to ask, “Why is ABC, Inc. a good fit for Barry but not for Susan?” I’ve often compared a carefully crafted investment plan to a financial roadmap. When you embark on a vacation, a roadmap is the…

Calmer waters are welcome Probably the simplest reasons anyone invests in stocks are to make money (capital gains), generate income (dividends), or some combination of the two. Of course, that really is putting it in the simplest of terms. Many of you have chosen to follow our recommendations to place a portion of your nest egg in a diversified portfolio that includes equities, because the stock market has historically offered superior long-term returns. Others are nearing or at retirement. For you, the empirical research suggests that a limited exposure to a diversified and conservative stock portfolio will not only generate…

LPL Research: Outlook 2016

When you think of a routine, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Some may think, it’s the mundane, the small steps and processes you follow to accomplish all your tasks for the day. But routine is more than that. It’s about forming good habits, feeling prepared. And perhaps the best part of a routine is the comfort that comes from knowing what to expect. For investors, the definition of a good routine would be knowing what to expect from the markets. Is there such thing as a routine year for markets? Over the last 50 years, the…
