Your biggest asset doesn't show up on a brokerage statement.

Most of what you're worth is one company. It pays you, insures you, employs people you care about. That's concentrated wealth of a different kind.

Here's the part that should bother you. The person advising you on all of it has, in most cases, never run a business and never managed wealth concentrated like this. Wall Street sends you an employee. A nice one, usually. But they've never made payroll, picked an entity, or watched a tax bill eat a year's profit, and it shows in the advice.

Your business will be the biggest sale of your life, and you only get to do it once. That's why you plan it years ahead, so it works out the way you want. It's not how much you make. It's how much you keep.

Does any of this sound familiar?

What owners tell us in the first meeting, almost word for word.

“My CPA does my taxes. My attorney did the documents. My advisor picks funds. Nobody is doing the whole thing.”

“Everything I have is tied up in one company I can't sell a piece of.”

“I'm not sure the business is worth anything without me. I figured I'd just close the doors when I'm done.”

“My advisor has never made payroll. You can tell.”

“My spouse has a 401(k) and stock at work. Nobody is looking at the two of us as one picture.”

“I'll get to my own planning after the next hire, the next quarter, the next contract.”

If a couple of those landed, you're in the right place. And to be fair, nobody was hired to coordinate all of those specialists. That's the gap, and it shouldn't all sit on your shoulders.

Everything under one roof.

The Capitol Family Office Formula coordinates every key area of your financial life. You skip the time, the headaches, and the costly mistakes, and get back to what actually matters.

Here is what each side of it means when most of what you own is the business.

Grow it
Wealth Management
Wealth that doesn't depend on the business.
  • One plan for the whole household: the business, your own money, and your spouse's job or company, looked at together instead of in pieces.
  • Real money built outside the business, so your family's future doesn't hang on one company or one buyer.
  • Your number: when work becomes optional, and what the business has to be worth to get you there.
Keep it
Tax Planning
Keep more of what you've built.
  • The retirement plans only owners get: cash balance plans, solo 401(k)s, and others. For the right owner they can shelter hundreds of thousands a year that an employee simply can't.
  • The entity decision (S corp, C corp, something else) made years ahead and for the sale, not just for this April's return.
  • The biggest sale of your life taxed once and planned for years, down to which state you're living in when it closes.
Protect it
Asset Protection
Your family is fine, whatever happens to the business.
  • If something happens to you or a partner, your family and the business are both taken care of.
  • Your home and your savings walled off from the business, so its problems stay its problems.
  • A plan that still works if the deal falls through, or if you decide you'd rather keep it.
Pass it on
Estate & Legacy
What you built outlives you, on your terms.
  • Whether it goes to a buyer, your kids, or your people, decided while you still have options, not when someone forces the question.
  • The hard family conversations happen before the money arrives, not after it changes everyone's plans.
  • The check from the sale turned into a paycheck you can't outlive, and then into whatever you want it to be after that.

We've made payroll. Most advisors haven't.

From one business owner to another.

Capitol Family Office is a business we founded and have run since 2011. Payroll, entity decisions, retirement plans, the tax bill, the slow quarter. We've made the decisions you're making, with our own money on the line. That changes the advice.

Experience advising owners, and being one.

We've sat beside business owners through growth, sales, and handoffs to the kids. You get the benefit of what we've learned across many businesses, not just your own.

Someone finally runs the whole.

Keep your CPA, your attorney, your banker, your insurance pro. They're good at their jobs. We're the one office accountable for how it all fits together, and when.

Straight answers for owners.

01 Is my business actually worth anything?

Potentially. Owners tend to sit in one of two lanes. Some assume it's worth nothing without them, so they plan to close the doors when they're done and leave real money on the table, sometimes hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions. Others have a multiple in mind the market won't pay. Either way, you need a plan that helps you get the most out of your business.

02 How early should we start?

The more lead time, the better. Five years out is ideal, because that's when the big moves still have time to work: the entity choice, the owner-only retirement plans, gifting at today's value instead of the sale price. But we've had owners retire, sell, and call us the next day, and there was still plenty to do. The point is having a plan, because a plan is what gives you options.

03 What does owning a business have to do with being my advisor?

Everything, it turns out. Most advisors are employees. They've never chosen an entity, funded a plan with their own profit, or sat with a tax bill that ate a good year. They're trained to manage a portfolio, and a business owner is not a portfolio. We've run ours since 2011 and have sat beside a lot of owners through theirs. The advice is different because the experience is.

04 Do I have to give up my CPA or attorney?

Not necessarily. You're going to need specialists. Our role is to make sure the ones you have are qualified, expert at their specific jobs, and willing to coordinate with the other people in your life. Keeping everything coordinated is part of our job.

05 My spouse has a job (or a business). Does that matter?

It matters a lot. A household with a business on one side and a 401(k) and company stock on the other is running on two different rulebooks. Most advice treats them separately, which is how one side gets all the attention and the other collects dust. We plan the two of you as one picture.

06 What happens after the sale?

The work changes. It doesn't stop. The check has to become a paycheck you can't outlive, the estate documents suddenly describe a life you no longer have, and your family is newly aware of the number. We plan for that year before it arrives, which is also why we'd rather meet you five years before the sale than five weeks after.

07 Where are you located?

In the Portland, Oregon area. All meetings happen over video, so we work with families across the country as easily as across town. Capitol Family Office is a fee-only financial planner and fiduciary, independent since 2011.

08What's your minimum?

$1M in investable assets, counting things like your 401(k), IRAs, brokerage accounts, and company stock. Not sure whether you're there? Fill out the form anyway and let's have a conversation.
