The second half is the harder job.

When you were working, the framework was already built. Income came in, there were places to save it, and if you made a mistake you could keep saving and out-earn it. Retirement takes that framework away. Now you just have accounts, and the job is building a new framework around them: one that makes the money last, keeps taxes low, and holds up for decades.

On top of that, the golden years run a lot longer than they used to, which is great. Two generations ago, retirement was a few years at the end of a working life. Now we have clients who retired in their late forties and will spend more years living on their money than they spent earning it. Longer lives, healthier lives, more to do. Which is where the question comes from. How much is enough?

Without the right framework, people either overspend or underspend. Neither one announces itself. The mistakes add up quietly over the years, and the bill comes due in one of two ways: a life you didn't enjoy as much as you could have, or money that runs short when you can least afford it. It's not how much you saved. It's how long it lasts.

Does any of this sound familiar?

What retirees tell us in the first meeting, almost word for word.

“We have accounts at four different places, and nobody can tell us if we'll be okay at ninety.”

“My advisor never brought up Roth conversions. Now I'm told the best years are behind us.”

“I didn't retire to become a tax planner.”

“The rules keep changing and nobody calls to tell us.”

“We could probably afford the trip. We just don't know for sure, so we don't go.”

“My husband handled all of this. I don't know what we own, and I don't know who to call.”

If a couple of those landed, you're in the right place. And to be fair, nobody was hired to coordinate all of those specialists. That's the gap, and it shouldn't all sit on your shoulders.

Everything under one roof.

The Capitol Family Office Formula coordinates every key area of your financial life. You skip the time, the headaches, and the costly mistakes, and get back to what actually matters.

Here is what each side of it means once the paychecks stop.

Grow it
Wealth Management
Income built to last as long as you do.
  • You know exactly where your paycheck comes from each year, and that it will keep coming.
  • Your money is set up to last as long as you do, not to win a race against the market.
  • Enough set aside that a bad market never forces you to sell at the wrong time. You sleep fine when the news is ugly.
Keep it
Tax Planning
Your savings last longer when less goes to taxes.
  • Lower taxes over your whole retirement, not just this year. We plan years ahead so your savings last longer.
  • No surprise jump in what you pay for Medicare. We watch the income limits before you cross them.
  • Social Security started at the right time for both of you, so the one who lives longer is taken care of.
Protect it
Asset Protection
The plan holds up when life doesn't go to plan.
  • If one of you needs care someday, it's already decided how it gets paid for. It doesn't fall on your family.
  • If you can't make decisions for a while, someone you trust can step in, and they know where everything is.
  • Scammers go after retirees. We put safeguards on every account and keep watch, so you're a much harder target.
Pass it on
Estate & Legacy
It goes to the people you love, without the mess.
  • The right people inherit. We check the names on every account, including the ones you forgot you had.
  • Your will and trust still do what you meant them to do, even though the laws have changed since you signed them.
  • Your family already knows us, so they have someone to call on the hardest day.

The golden years, with the money to match.

One Life.

Retirement is supposed to be the good part. The years you worked for, spent the way you want. Our job is to make sure the money is never the reason you hold back. We help you get clear on what financial freedom looks like, build a plan that pays for it, and run it year after year so you spend your time enjoying it instead of managing it. We've walked a lot of families through this over the last two decades.

We've done this for decades.

Retirees have been one of our specialties since the beginning. Living well on what you saved means being good at all of it at once: the plan, income from the right accounts in the right order, taxes kept low, the estate and the legacy built with your attorney. And because the tax law changes every year, the plan gets adjusted every year. That's the job, and we've done it across a lot of retirements.

Someone finally runs the whole.

Keep your CPA, your attorney, your insurance pro. They're good at their jobs. We're the one office accountable for how it all fits together, and when.

Straight answers for retirees.

01 What does working with you actually look like?

One number to call. One team for everything. We coordinate all of it: your income, your taxes, your insurance, your estate, and the people around you. We meet on a schedule through the year, handle the work between meetings, and call you when something needs a decision.

02 How do we know if we have enough?

That's the first question we answer. We turn what you've saved into a monthly paycheck, test it against a long life, a bad market, and rising costs, and show you the answer in plain dollars. Then we check it every year, so you can spend with confidence instead of hoping it works out.

03 How involved do we need to be?

Very little. You act as the CEO of your finances. We act as the CFO. We're busy working on it and reporting back to you at scheduled meetings through the year, and you get a list of decisions only when a decision is actually needed. Your job is to enjoy your One Life.

04 What happens if one of us can't manage things anymore?

Nothing changes, and that's the point. In most couples, one person handles the money. We plan for the day that person can't, whether that's a health event or a loss. Both of you know us, both of you know the plan, and the people who would step in, like your kids or a trusted friend, know how to reach us. The plan keeps running because it never depended on one person's memory.

05 Do I have to give up my CPA or attorney?

Not necessarily. You're going to need specialists. Our role is to make sure the ones you have are qualified, expert at their specific jobs, and willing to coordinate with the other people in your life. Keeping everything coordinated is part of our job.

06 Where are you located?

In the Portland, Oregon area. All meetings happen over video, so we work with families across the country as easily as across town. Capitol Family Office is a fee-only financial planner and fiduciary, independent since 2011.

07 What's your minimum?

$1M in investable assets, counting things like your 401(k), IRAs, brokerage accounts, and company stock. Not sure whether you're there? Fill out the form anyway and let's have a conversation.
